Is stainless steel hypoallergenic?

Stainless steel is one of the safest materials for sensitive skin, but the full answer is: yes… with nuances .
Most people tolerate it perfectly; it doesn't darken the skin and doesn't cause irritation. But not all stainless steels are created equal, and that makes all the difference.
So… is it hypoallergenic?
In jewelry, the most common types are used:
✔ 316L (surgical steel)
The safest.
It contains very little nickel and it is "encapsulated", meaning it does not come into direct contact with the skin.
That's why it's a favorite for people with allergies or dermatitis.
✔ 304 (common jewelry steel)
Very safe too.
It has a little more nickel in the mix, but it is still usually well tolerated.
Most people don't notice anything at all.
Can I have a reaction to stainless steel?
It's rare, but possible if:
- You have a very strong nickel allergy
- You buy low-quality steel (not 304 or 316L)
- The piece has cheap metallic plating on top.
